How to Obtain a Juminhyo (Residence Certificate) in Japan

After you start living in Japan, you may be asked to submit a Juminhyo (住民票) for various procedures, such as signing contracts, or applying for public or private services.

Below is a simple guide explaining what a Juminhyo is and how to obtain one.

1. What is a Juminhyo & where can you get it?

A Juminhyo is an official document that proves your registered address in Japan.
It shows the address that is registered based on your Residence Card.

You can obtain your Juminhyo from the city office that has jurisdiction over the area where your apartment is located.

2. How to obtain a Juminhyo at the ward office

To obtain a Juminhyo at the ward office, simply:

• Bring your Residence Card and Passport

• Tell the staff that you would like to obtain a Juminhyo (住民票)

In most cases, no additional documents are required.

When requesting the document, please ask for a Juminhyo without the My Number (Individual Number), unless they are specifically required by the institution requesting it.

3. Obtaining a Juminhyo at a convenience store (with a My Number Card)

If you have a My Number Card, you can also obtain a Juminhyo at a convenience store.

How it works:

• Go to a convenience store such as 7-Eleven, Lawson, or FamilyMart

• Use the multi-function printer

• Insert your My Number Card

• Follow the on-screen instructions to print your Juminhyo

This option is very convenient and is often available early in the morning or late at night.
